Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025: Lakshya Sen’s Semi-Final Exit Ends India’s Campaign

Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025: Lakshya Sen’s Semi-Final Exit Ends India’s Campaign

India’s badminton campaign at the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025 came to an end as Lakshya Sen suffered a semi-final defeat against local favourite Kenta Nishimoto on Saturday.

At the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium, world No. 15 Lakshya Sen lost to world No. 13 Nishimoto 21-19, 14-21, 21-12 in a contest that lasted 1 hour 17 minutes, marking his third loss in six career meetings against the Japanese shuttler.

Match Summary

Lakshya, a World Championships bronze medallist and Paris 2024 semi-finalist, started strongly, racing to an 8-4 lead. Nishimoto fought back to level the first game at 9-all, and the opening set turned into a tight contest. The score remained neck-and-neck until 18-all, when Nishimoto secured two crucial points to close out the game.

In the second game, Nishimoto initially surged to a 7-3 lead. Lakshya responded impressively, winning eight of the next nine points to hold an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, he extended his advantage with four consecutive points, forcing a deciding third game.

The decider, however, was dominated by Nishimoto. Holding a four-point lead at the interval, he steadily increased the gap to clinch a convincing victory.

Lakshya’s Journey

Lakshya Sen’s semi-final run at the BWF Super 500 event was highlighted by a notable quarter-final win over former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore. This marked Lakshya’s third semi-final appearance of the 2025 BWF World Tour season, having reached the final at the Hong Kong Open in September and the semi-finals at the Macau Open in August.

Despite a challenging season with 11 first-round exits in 19 events, Lakshya has produced significant victories, including a memorable win over world No. 2 Anders Antonsen at the Denmark Open.

Lakshya was the only Indian shuttler to reach the semi-finals at the Kumamoto Masters. HS Prannoy, India’s other contender, bowed out in the round of 16.
