IPL 2026 Retention: Complete List of Players Retained and Released Ahead of the Mini Auction

IPL 2026 Retention: Complete List of Players Retained and Released Ahead of the Mini Auction

The official IPL 2026 retention list was announced on Saturday, confirming which players each of the 10 franchises have decided to keep or release ahead of the upcoming mini auction.

Punjab Kings topped the chart with 21 retained players, the highest among all teams. At the other end, Kolkata Knight Riders retained only 12 players, the fewest this season.

In a major development, KKR released Andre Russell, a franchise pillar since 2014, along with Venkatesh Iyer, who was their costliest signing in IPL history last year.

Chennai Super Kings are expected to be highly active at the auction table after parting ways with 13 players, including the now-retired Ravichandran Ashwin. However, MS Dhoni has been retained and will continue with the team.

Several other high-profile names were released across franchises, including
Glenn Maxwell, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Unlike mega auction years—where only a small core can be kept—mini auctions allow franchises to retain most of their squads, as long as they stay within the INR 120 crore salary cap and the 18–25 player squad size.

Reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have retained 17 players, ensuring continuity in their title-winning setup led by Virat Kohli.

Confirmed Trades Ahead of IPL 2026

Several significant trades were completed before the retention deadline, reshaping team combinations:

CSK ↔ RR:
CSK traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson.
Donovan Ferreira also moved back to RR from Delhi Capitals through a deal involving Nitish Rana.

MI ↔ LSG:
Shardul Thakur joined Mumbai Indians from Lucknow Super Giants, with Arjun Tendulkar moving the other way.

LSG ↔ SRH:
LSG strengthened their pace attack by acquiring Mohammed Shami in an all-cash trade.

MI ↔ GT / KKR:
MI picked up West Indian all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans.
Mayank Markande also returned to MI after a trade with KKR.

These trades, combined with the retention decisions, set the stage for a high-stakes IPL 2026 mini auction.
